CISF takes over Srinagar airport security

New Delhi, Feb 26 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Wednesday took over the security of hyper sensitive and strategically important Srinagar airport from from Jammu and Kashmir Police.

A CISF unit headed by a Senior Commandant rank officer will guard the airport round the clock, a decision taken by the Union Home Ministry earlier this year. With this, there are 62 airports under CISF security cover, the paramilitary force said.

The 1.40-lakh strong force is a premier multi-skilled security agency of the country which is mandated to provide security to major critical infrastructure installations of the country in diverse areas.

The CISF is currently providing security cover to nuclear installations, space establishments, airports, seaports, power plants, sensitive government buildings and heritage monuments.

As many as 348 units of CISF are deployed across the country to guard these specific establishments, including Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

CISF's other responsibilities are providing VIP security. On the occasion, M.A. Ganapathy, Special Director General (CISF), Airport Sector, emphasized that a coordinated effort should be made by all government agencies and stakeholders to ensure security of Srinagar airport.

He attended the programme as a chief guest. The move to formally hand over the security of Srinagar airport to the CISF came in January after the arrest of tainted Jammu and Kashmir Police DSP Davinder Singh.

Singh was arrested while he was transporting Hizbul Mujahideen commander Naveed Babu, his accomplice and a law school dropout to Jammu.

Singh was associated with the anti-hijacking unit of the J&K Police and was posted at the Srinagar airport as part of the official team that received a delegation of foreign envoys days before his arrest.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration had reportedly written to the Ministry of Home Affairs, requesting the CISF to take over the security of Srinagar as well as Jammu airports.

Sources in the Home Ministry said that CISF will likely be inducted at Jammu Airport by March.
