Paswan to campaign for ordinance on quota in promotions

New Delhi, Feb 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government might face trouble from its own allies over reservation in promotions for SCs, STs and OBCs in the government jobs as Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan has started building a campaign demanding an ordinance in Parliament for the purpose.

The Union Minister recently met more than 50 MPs belonging to SC and ST community at his residence here in this context.

Six Union Ministers, including Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawarchand Gehlot, were also present in the meeting.

Sources said that Paswan might very soon call for nationwide campaign to demand an ordinance in the Parliament to make reservation in promotion easy for SC/STs and OBCs.

"Paswan had always kept that reservation in promotion is essential for SC/STs and OBCs but with courts bringing a halt to this, we feel ordinance is the way out," a source close to Paswan told IANS.

Last week, a two-judge bench of the top court ruled that the states are not bound to provide reservation in appointments. Also, there is no fundamental right to claim quota in promotions, it held.

Earlier in the day, Gehlot told Rajya Sabha that the Central government is committed to the welfare of people from Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Class (OBC).
