J&K snowshoe team to represent India at Japan world games


Srinagar, Feb 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) A nine-member of snowshoe team, which hails from Kashmir, will represent India at the three-day World Snowshoe Championship-2020 starting on February 14 in Myoko, Japan, which being organised by the World Snowshoe Federation.

Twenty-four teams will take part in the event. The Indian team, which will leave Delhi for Japan on Wednesday, is being fielded by the Gulmarg-based Snowshoe Federation of India.

Snowshoe, a relatively new sports in Kashmir, is very popular in the USA and European countries. "It's not just a sport but everyday activity in there during winter months," said Sarmad Hafeez, Secretary of the Youth Services and Sports Department, while flagging off the team here on Monday.

"We, in J&K, have got lot of places where snowshoe activity and sports can be held," Hafeez said. At the Khelo India Games, to be held in Kashmir, snowshoe would be introduced as a new major activity, he added.

The team includes Zain Ali and Ayaan Bin Shahnaz, students of Burn Hall Higher Secondary Institute, their instructor Feroz Ahmad, Gulzar Ahmad, Mushtaq Bashir, Zulfqar and Muzamil Hussain.

"We are happy to receive all support from the government. It has boosted the morale of players. We are confident to do well at the event," said Mir Mudassar, a team member.

"During the event, our team will also be highlighting tourism in Kashmir. We will be on the forefront to promote Kashmir tourism," he said.
