Kolkata, Feb 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has stopped work on correction and enrolment for new Aadhaar cards temporarily following an uproar in the city over the requirement for the National Population Register number in the form.
There was tension in west Kolkata's Watgunge area on Tuesday after some applicants stage a demonstration over their objection to the column seeking NPR receipt or number in the Aadhaar enrolment/correction form.
KMC sources said they had entrusted a bank with the task of conducting the process of rectification and enrolment.
"The process was on for correction and enrolment for new Aadhaar card. Many people were filing up the form. Suddenly it was found there was a column for NPR in Aadhaar form," said city mayor and Trinamool Congress senior leader Firhad Hakim.
He recalled that the state government has already stayed the work for preparing and updating the National Population Register (NPR) in the backdrop of protests against the new citizenship law CAA.
"Since we have already stayed the work on NPR, then why is there the need for this number in the form? People have doubts. I am also doubtful," said Hakim.
He said the civic body has asked for clarification from the bank.
"Till we get the clarification from the bank, we have asked them to stop the work on Aadhaar enrolment and correction," he said.
The Trinamool has been running the KMC board since 2010.
