Actor Naseeruddin Shah had fewer kind words for his ‘A Wednesday’ movie co-star Anupam Kher, who vocally endorses the government and its policies on Twitter. “Someone like Anupam Kher has been very vocal. I don’t think he needs to be taken seriously. He’s a clown. Any number of his contemporaries from NFD and FTII can attest to his sycophantic nature. It’s in his blood, he can’t help it.”
Actor Anupam Kher on Wednesday hit back at Naseeruddin Shah, suggesting that his "clown" jibe was made under the influence of intoxicants. He also accused the 69-year-old of criticising a number of celebrities and claimed that he considered himself "in very good company".
"If you could criticise Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Shah Rukh Khan or Virat Kohli, then I'm sure I'm in great company. And none of them has taken your statements seriously. Because we all know this is not you speaking. The substances you have been consuming for years have taken away your sense of judging what is right and what is not," Anupam Kher said in a video statement he tweeted Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier, actor Naseeruddin Shah supported actor Deepika Padukone’s visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru University, and called it “courageous”. In a recent interview, Naseer talked at length about the protests against the CAA, the deafening silence of big Bollywood celebrities on it, the student protests and Deepika’s decision to show solidarity.
A couple of years ago, Naseeruddin courted controversy when he said he felt unsure about the safety of his children in the country due to the rising communal temperament. “I feel anxious for my children because tomorrow if a mob surrounds them and asks, ‘Are you a Hindu or a Muslim?’ they will have no answer,” he had said.
