Kolkata, Jan 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) Displaying placards and posters opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed nationwide National Register of Citizens, hundreds of Left students staged a protest demonstration outside the Victoria Memorial Hall here on Wednesday, where BJP MP Swapan Dasgupta was speaking at a session of the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet.
The students descended on the road outside the main gate of the iconic monument complex and raised slogans against the BJP-ruled centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The majority of the protestors were students of the Jadavpur University and the Presidency University.
The session, centering on Dasgupta's book "Awakening Bharat Mata", got delayed due to the protest.
A large number of personnel from the Kolkata police were deployed outside all the gates of the iconic venue.
This is the second time Dasgupta has faced protests in the state.
On January 8, CPI-M affiliated Students Federation of India activists confined Dasgupta for close to six hours inside a locked room of Visva-Bharti, where he had gone to deliver a lecture on the new citizenship law.
Vice Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty and other varsity officials were also confined at the Social Work department at Sreeniketan, a little distance away from the main campus at Santiniketan late into the night by the protesting students.
