Kolkata Port Trust part of Republic Day parade

New Delhi, Jan 22 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Ministry of Shipping has dedicated its tableau for Republic Day parade to Kolkata Port Trust.

The Kolkata Port Trust represents a theme of glorious past and vibrant future which is a glorious saga of 150 years.

The Port of Calcutta began its official journey on October 17, 1870 by an Act, although, the Port was in existence long before.

After the beginning of the Docks at Kolkata, the first ship had arrived at Kidderpore Dock in 1892.

"Since then, Kolkata Port has witnessed stages of modernisation, and is today equipped with the latest technology in cargo handling and riverine navigation enabling it to service even cape-sized vessels," said a senior official of the Ministry of Shipping.

The front portion of the tableau begins with a heritage replica of an old ship, reminiscent of the ships that arrived at the time of the formation of the first docks. It shows the labourers (then called 'coolies') loading and unloading goods.

The historic light house and clock tower, all prestigious utilitarian possessions of the Port, symbolise the passage of time and the glorious riverine journey of India's oldest Port in existence.

The middle portion focuses on the Howrah Bridge or Rabindra Setu, one of the city's finest engineering and architectural icons built and maintained last 76 years with pride by the Port.

"Kolkata Dock System and the Haldia Dock Complex are twin dock systems, handling, inter alia, large volumes of containers and liquid cargo," the officer added.

At the rear another engineering marvel, the motorised Bascule Bridge at Kidderpore Docks has been featured through animation.
