SL in talks with S’pore over ex-central bank gov’s extradition

Colombo, Jan 21 (SocialNews.XYZ) Sri Lanka was still in talks with Singapore over the extradition of former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran over the $74 million treasury bond scam, it was reported.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa told the media on Monday that a due process needed to be followed to secure the Mahendran was ongoing, reports the Colombo Gazette.

Extradition documents which were signed by former President Maithripala Sirisena were handed over to the Singapore government by the Sri Lankan High Commission in the island city-state last year.

In June 2019, the Attorney General filed indictments against Mahendran and nine others before the Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar over the Central Bank treasury bond scam, following which an arrest warrant was issued for the former Governor.

In 2015, Mahendran, a Singapore national of Sri Lankan origin, was accused of passing sensitive information to his bond-dealer son-in-law to make millions in undue profits.
