Laxmi Agarwal on whom the forthcoming real-life drama Chhapaak is based, said that the film will address the acid in people’s minds and hearts in our society and she is happy that Deepika and Meghna made a film on such an issue.
The makers of Chhapaak released the title track of the film in Mumbai Today. The event was graced by Deepika Padukone, Meghna Gulzar, Shankar Mahadevan, Gulzar along with Laxmi Agarwal.
Talking about the film and her thoughts on the issue of acid attacks, Laxmi said, “I am so happy that I met Meghan Gulzar in 2016 and she told me that she wanted to work with me on this cause because no one knew about acid attack violence before 2013. But when some of the survivors started to come out and started sharing their stories, their voices were heard and now one of those voices is reaching people through this film, Chhapaak”
“This film will give society a huge impact. I would like to thank Deepika Padukone for playing the role of Laxmi Agarwal. I am so happy that finally you guys have proved and shown that beauty is not that important. Awareness is important and it is imperative to bring this cause to surface. The victimization of the survivor and acid in the minds of society needed to be shown, this film will bring out that acid which people carry in their hearts and minds” added Laxmi.
Laxmi Agarwal is an acid attack survivor and speaks for the rights of acid attack victims and runs a campaign to ‘Stop Sale Acid’. She was attacked in 2005 at age 15, by a 32 year old man whose advances she had rejected.
Further adding, Laxmi said, “I was happy when Deepika Padukone decided to play this role. And I thought; now the work that needed to be done in society is done now. When the saw the first look of the film on social media for the first time, I was like wow that is Laxmi. When I first time met Deepika on the sets of the film, I realized that now a lot is going to change from the society. The minds of people in society will now change”
Helmed by Meghna Gulzar, 'Chhapaak' revolves around the struggles and triumph that Laxmi Agarwal went through. The film is slated to release on the 10th January 2020.
