Really happy to get juicy role of a mother in ‘Jai Mummy Di’ says Poonam Dhillon

Actress Poonam Dhillon, who next will be seen onscreen in ‘Jai Mummy Di’, has said that, she feeling really happy to get a substantial and juicy role of a mother in upcoming comedy-drama film.

Poonam Dhillon was interacting with the media at the trailer launch of ‘Jai Mummy Di’ along with her co-actors Sunny Singh, Sonnalli Seygall, film’s director Navjot Gulati and producers Luv Ranjan and Bhushan Kumar on Thursday in Mumbai.

In ‘Jai Mummy Di’, veteran actress Poonam Dhillon and Supriya Pathak are playing role of mothers who are nicked named Mogambo and Gabbar, and they have a rivalry going for decades. Sunny Singh and Sonnalli Seygall are their kids and they fall in love, which starts a whole new chapter of discovering the root-cause of their mothers fight and how things could be patched.

Talking about her character in the film, Dhillon, said, “I have been saying no to a lot of films because somewhere I could not get myself to do a role of a mother who is just a sidekick in the film. I was very happy to receive a juicy role of a mother. I think not only a mother, woman of any age or any kind of positioning would be great. I would like to do a good role that’s why I am thankful to Luv (Ranjan) and Navjot (Gulati) for considering me for this role. I think its fun doing characters which has so many dimensions.”

When asked Dhillon what are her thoughts on actresses’ shelf life in Hindi film industry at this point of time, she said, “I feel things have changed. I started my career at 16 and by the age of 26 when I got married, I thought of quitting films. But today I am seeing actresses come in films in their 20s and they work till they are 40 plus and the taboo that married actresses can’t work in films has fortunately gone out of the window because they keep themselves fit and they look gorgeous and glamorous. I think just because she is married, it doesn’t matter. In Hollywood, we have seen women get married five times and still they are heroines and here (India), if a heroine marries once, they (makers of the film) don’t cast them in their films.”

When asked Dhillon her experience working with Sonnalli Seygall and Sunny Singh who are actors of current generation, she said, “I don’t feel like I am working with another generation because I feel that I also belong to this generation. I had a lot of fun working with Sonnalli and Sunny. The whole team of this film doesn’t make feel that I am a senior actor and they make feel one of them. They give me respect but they also give me a lot of love. We have partied together and we had chats with each other so, I had very comfortable feeling with new lot of actors. I have learned from them a different kind of discipline, punctuality and commitment to work which earlier wasn’t the case because there used to be a star system and I appreciate that a lot.”

Sharing her experience working with Navjot Gulati who is one of new directors from Hindi film industry, she said, “I am playing loud, impulsive and extremely aggressive mother in this film and it’s very contrary to my image in films. We are all actually Punjabis sitting in a row here so, loudness is inherent in all of us. I would say Navjot (Gulati) is very mild director. He doesn’t sound like he is the captain of the ship and takes his decision. I think it’s really nice to work with a director who knows his job but at the same time, he gives you that space. I think new generation of directors is fully well-versed with their craft and they do their home-work throughout the shooting of the film. I have also worked with directors who have sat on the set and written the next scene’s dialogue so, there has been a great change in professionalism. I am looking forward to work a lot of new and younger directors and that includes Luv Ranjan as well.”

‘Jai Mummy Di’ is directed by Navjot Gulati and produced by T-Series’ Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar and Luv Films’ Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg. It will release on January 17, 2020.
