Court convicts 46 in Yanam factory rioting case

Puducherry, Nov 13 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Chief Judicial Magistrate on Wednesday convicted 46 people and sentenced them to two-year jail term in cases of rioting that occurred at the Yanam plant of Regency Ceramics in 2012, here.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had registered a case on the orders of the Madras High Court and took over the investigation from local police relating to the attack on Yanam police station and also on policemen by the accused persons.

According to the CBI, during investigation, the agency identified 84 accused persons and collected "clinching evidence" relating to the attack on the Yanam police station on January 27, 2012.

After investigation, the agency filed a chargesheet against 84 accused persons in 2013.

The agency said that during the course of trial, 41 witnesses were examined as prosecution witnesses. As many as 60 documents were marked and electronic evidence containing video footage were marked by the prosecution.

"On conclusion of the trial, the 46 accused persons were convicted by the court and 38 persons were acquitted," the CBI said.

The case relats to the attack on policemen and the Yanam police station in which several personnel were injured and five police vehicles were damaged.
