Four states went under Prez rule since 2014

New Delhi, Nov 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) The ruling BJP has been opposed to President's Rule. As late as this June, Home Minister Amit Shah blasted the Congress-led opposition for throttling "democracy". He had said, "I would like to say that so far, there have 132 instances when Article 356 of the Constitution (that imposes President's rule) was used in the country. Of these, 93 instances happened when there was a Congress government at the Centre."

But, this would not be the first example when President's rule is imposed during the BJP rule.

  • Jammu & Kashmir: The erstwhile state is the latest to have gone into President's rule under BJP-ruled NDA. Not only in the run-up to the abrogation of Article 370 from the hill state, the Central rule was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir in June 2017.

It was after the resignation of the then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti when BJP withdrew support to the PDP-led government. Before that in 2015, after failure in government formation following a fractured verdict in Assembly elections, Central rule was imposed.

  • Arunachal Pradesh: The north-eastern state witnessed 26 days of President's rule in 2016 after 21 Congress MLAs joined hands with 11 BJP and two Independent MLAs, reducing the government into a minority. However, the matter was challenged in the apex court and it, in a bold move, reinstated the Congress government.

  • Uttarakhand: The hill state saw President's Rule twice in 2016 -- for 25 days and 19 days separately. First it happened after a split in the state Congress and then again in May that year.

  • Maharashtra: The state's tryst with the Central rule in 2014 lasted 33 days when the then Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan resigned following the break-up of 15-year-old Congress-NCP alliance in the state. Just as the state was going to the polls, the alliance fell apart, resulting in Presidents Rule.

Though Delhi and Andhra Pradesh, too, saw President's rule in 2014, but they were under UPA rule. When on February 14, 2014 President's rule was imposed in the national capital, it lasted almost a year - 362 days. Arvind Kejriwal had resigned as Chief Minister after failing to table the Jan Lokpal Bill in the Delhi Assembly, which brought the Central rule.
