New Delhi, Nov 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) Name a popular Bollywood song, and its likely that the man behind it is Amit Trivedi. From 'Emotional Atyachar (2009) to 'London Thumakda (2014) to a more recent, 'Naina Da Kya Kasur (2018), the composer has made audiences croon and has been an industry favorite.
Trivedi, 40, shot to fame with 'Dev.D', which earned him several awards, including a National Film Award, yet what has remained constant all these years is his quest for originality. Asked how he stays continually relevant in a fast-changing Bollywood, Trivedi says the mantra is to adapt.
"You have to adapt yourself to the changing times. There is no other way. You must keep up with what's happening around you. You afford to be complacent on that front at all. Otherwise you won't be relevant," he told IANSlife over email.
He also explains how he composes a score for the film.
"It starts off with the narration where there is a writer and director. They are a key combination and for me, nothing can happen without them. They bring me to the world of what the film and the characters are all about...what's their state of mind and whatever is happening in the film"
That moment is where he starts his journey from.
"I start picking nuances from that point. According to where the film is set and what it's trying to say to the audience, with all those things in mind, I prepare the sound and the world of music in my mind."
Trivedi adds that composing used to be a very beautiful organic process, earlier, but is more commercially driven now. "So, you end up focusing on "yeh chalega ya nahin chalega?", rather than earlier where it was "wow, this is the film, this is the situation" and you make the music for that."
When asked what his personal taste in music is like, he says: "It's beautiful! It ranges across many genres and styles. My current go-to artist and playlist that gives me 'sukoon' is 'The Midnight'. I keep going back to them and love their sound. Then there's Coldplay, who are everyone's favourite. Maroon 5, Sting...the classics!"
Trivedi will be performing at the OnePlus Music Festival on November 16 in Mumbai. For him, music festivals are a win-win.
"A lot of people in the audience may not know who Amit Trivedi is! But then they come to these festivals, like the OnePlus Music Festival; and they like what they hear, it's 'sone pe suhaga'. It really opens up their horizons to artists they may not have known before."
He shared why a smartphone brand like OnePlus entering the music festival space, is great.
"Music is a universal language and really an interesting way for a brand to expand their consumer horizon. With the OnePlus Music Festival, the brand is giving their community a chance to experience musicians from across India and the world. As artists, it gives us the opportunity to connect with our fans on and off the screen. Something that we really crave!"
Trivedi is currently working on three projects: a Dharma Productions-Gunjan Saxena film, 'Kargil Girl', 'Maidan' with Amit Sharma, and Anurag Kashyap's next film.
Catch Amit Trivedi live at the OnePlus Music Festival on November 16, 2019 along with international artists Katy Perry and Dua Lipa, and local artistes like Aswekeepsearching and The Local Train.
