Jaipur, Oct 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Congress government in Rajasthan has decided to go for indirect polls during the civic unit elections scheduled to be held in November.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday.
A few days back during a meeting of the Congress at the party's state office, some leaders had expressed apprehension in view of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) campaign on the abrogation of Article 370. The Chief Minister had asked State Minister Shanti Dhariwal to collect an elaborate feedback on the scenario and then take a call.
The government was in a dilemma as the Chief Minister had himself promised to go for direct civic unit polls during the last Assembly election.
Dhariwal while speaking to the media on Monday, said: "Cabinet has changed its decision to go for direct elections looking at present circumstances where violence, fear and insecurity loomed large on the society.
"The BJP wants to divide the society and specially there are efforts to separate one particular class from the mainstream. We want love and harmony should be retained in society and the feeling of brotherhood should prosper.
"If there are direct elections, then there are chances of violence outbreak. Hence, we have decided to go back to indirect polls," he said.
