Pak Hindu girl death: Judicial probe from Friday

Islamabad, Sep 26 (IANS) A judicial probe into the case of a Pakistani Hindu medical student who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her hostel room earlier this month, will begin from Friday after the Sindh High Court (SHC) granted permission in this regard.

An SHC judge had sought permission following a letter written to him by the Sindh government, seeking a judicial probe into the matter.

Larkana Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Irfan Ali Baloch confirmed the development to Dawn news on Wednesday.

"It was decided that the judge will start the process of judicial inquiry from Friday," he added.

He said that the judge is likely to visit the hostel room, from where Nimrita Kumari's body had been recovered, adding that forensic reports of cell phones and laptops taken into custody by the police would also be shared with him.

Nimrita's body was found on September 16 hanging from the ceiling fan in her hostel room at the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU) in Larkana. She was enrolled in the university's Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme and was a final year student.

While the police has presumed that she had committed suicide, but her family members, as well as Hindu community leaders, have insisted that she was killed and demanded a joint investigation team (JIT) be formed to probe her death.

Nimrita's brother Vishal, a medical consultant in Dow Medical College in Karachi, had told the media that the marks around her neck suggested that she had not committed suicide, Dawn news reported.

He had further claimed that the marks on her neck looked like those made by cable wires, while the wounds on her arms suggested that someone was holding her down.

Police have been keeping two students - Mehran Abro and Wasay alias Ali Shan Memon - in custody for several days for questioning.

Abro, one of the 32 accused persons in the case, was taken into custody on September. He has claimed that the victim was in love with him and wanted to get married.
