Guwahati, Sep 2 (IANS) Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Assam on a two-day visit from September 8, his first after the publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The Home Minister is likely to attend the plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) to be held on September 8 and 9. He is also scheduled to meet all the Chief Ministers of northeastern states during his visit.
The visit will come as amid the BJP expressing its unhappiness over the way the NRC was updated, claiming that it had included names of illegal foreigners and left out names of genuine Indian citizens.
Although the party leaders in Assam have remained tight-lipped, it is learnt that the state BJP leadership will appeal to the Home Minister for legislative action to protect "genuine Indian citizens", whose names had been left out of from the NRC.
Assam BJP President Ranjit Kumar Dass had earlier stated that the party will appeal to the Central government to pass legislation or amend the Constitution to protect the interest of the genuine Indian citizens of the country.
