Chandigarh, Aug 19 (IANS) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday announced Rs 100 crore for emergency relief and rehabilitation measures in the flood-hit regions of the state.
The Chief Minister said a special 'girdawari' would be conducted as the water level recedes to ensure adequate compensation for the affected farmers.
Singh made these announcements during a tour of the flood-affected areas of Ropar, where he evaluated the damage caused by the torrential rains of the past 72 hours and met people who had suffered damage as a result of the flooding.
He expressed grief over the death of three persons due to a roof collapse in Ludhiana district.
Singh later reviewed the overall flood situation in the state with senior officials. He was informed by the Chief Engineer, Drainage, that the overall situation in the Beas and Ravi rivers was under control though danger continued to lurk in areas adjacent to the Sutlej river and further downstream, at Harike headworks in Ferozepur.
Singh, who earlier travelled by road from Chandigarh to Ropar, described the situation as unprecedented and assured of all possible assistance from his government to the residents.
Reviewing the ground situation at Shampura village after visiting the Ropar headworks, the Chief Minister met slum dwellers in the area and directed the district administration to extend all necessary help to the affected families.
Wading through a flooded road at Khairabad village, Singh freely intermingled with the people and patiently listened to their grievances and assured them of prompt redressal.
Meanwhile, food relief teams of the Indian Army under the Western Command were carrying out rescue operations in various areas of Punjab and Haryana.
Teams with 60-70 persons in each have been deployed with the requisite equipment at Mirthal (Pathankot), Dinanagar (Gurdaspur), Phillaur, Nakodar, Shahkot in Jalandhar and near Karnal in Haryana, an official statement said.
Fifteen persons have been rescued from various flood-affected areas.
Additional teams are earmarked to be deployed at short notice in other areas of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, it added.
