Shimla, July 27 (IANS) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Saturday hailed the decision of the GST Council to reduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate on electric vehicles (EVs) from 12 to 5 per cent from August 1.
He said the decision to cut tax on electric vehicle chargers from 18 to 5 per cent and exemption on hiring of electric buses by local authorities were also appreciable steps, which were supported by the state government.
The Chief Minister said these decisions would go a long way in boosting the e-vehicle industry in the country which had been demanding a reduction in GST rates for a long time.
"This decision will have a significant impact on vehicular pollution and will pave the way for a cleaner environment," he said, adding that the ecologically sensitive state of Himachal Pradesh with a huge tourism potential is expected to be one of the major beneficiaries of this decision.
