Extortion demanded from Gurugram sweets trader

Gurugram, July 26 (IANS) A sweets shop owner filed a case of extortion in Sadar police station here on Friday alleging a person demanded Rs 5 lakh as protection money over phone.

As per the FIR, the shop owner alleged that an unknown person, who introduced himself as sarpanch of Bargujjar village, called him on Thursday around 11 p.m. threatening him to pay up Rs 5 lakh in a couple of days.

The caller had also said that he would inform the shop owner about the location where was supposed to receive the money, the FIR said.

The accused called the shop owner twice later, but he didn't take the call. The caller then dropped a voice message at shop owner's WhatsApp number, threatening him with dire consequences if he reported the matter to the police.

Subhash Bokan, the PRO of Gurugram police, said: "We have registered an FIR at Sadar police station and are investigating the matter. The caller's number is put on surveillance and voice analysis of the WhatsApp recording is underway. We have also called the sarpanch of Bargujjar village to take a voice sample."
