Law Secretaries summoned before SC over judicial vacancies

New Delhi, July 10 (IANS) The Supreme Court has ordered Law Secretaries of every state and Registrars General of each High Court to appear before them on July 30 for the hearing related to vacancies in the subordinate judiciary.

The direction by a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Aniruddha Bose came while hearing a plea seeking direction to fill up the vacancies in different cadres of the district and subordinate judicial services of the states and Union Territories.

The bench has directed the authorities concerned of the state governments and Union Territories and also the Registrar Generals of the various High Courts to inform the position on filling up of the vacancies in the judicial services in each state.

It has also asked them to explain details related to the total strength of each cadre, the number of posts in different cadres actually filled up and those lying vacant.

The bench also sought details of the number of posts in which selection is presently going on and the stage of the process and the number of posts for which the process of selection is yet to be initiated.

Apart from the Law Secretaries and the Registrars General, the court directed the four amici curiae in the case to be personally present on July 30 to ofer their views on the issue.
