Rain in Delhi ahead of monsoon arrival

New Delhi, July 4 (IANS) With the monsoon expected to reach the national capital this weekend, rains began on Thursday and are expected to continue for the next two days thanks to moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal, weather officials said.

Light to heavy rain is likely in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab from Thursday night, as per the weather agencies.

Parts of Delhi witnessed scattered drizzles on Thursday with Aya Nagar recording 10.1 mm of precipitation, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Areas such as Gurugram and Faridabad also received moderate rains on Thursday.

Subsequently, the mercury fell to 29 degrees Celsius on Thursday afternoon. However, the maximum temperature touched 38.4 degrees. On Friday, the mercury is expected to hover between 27-35 degrees Celsius.

IMD chief K.J. Ramesh told IANS: "We expect monsoon to come to Delhi in the next two-three days, around Sunday."

As per the latest data, monsoon winds have progressed till Rajasthan and parts of Uttar Pradesh.

According to private forecaster Skymet, the monsoon can reach Delhi on Saturday as well.

"There are always rains for two-three days before monsoon hits. Areas around Delhi such as Faridabad, and Gurugram have received good rainfall on Thursday. The monsoon can reach Delhi on Saturday," said Mahesh Palawat, Director at Skymet.

A thunderstorm is also expected in Haryana and Punjab in the next two days.

During the last 24 hours, moderate to heavy rain occurred over Madhya Pradesh, southeast Rajasthan and parts of Uttarakhand and Maharashtra.

Due to the likely westward movement of a low pressure system, widespread rain is expected in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Maharashtra's Vidarbha region and east Madhya Pradesh during the next two-three days, as per the IMD.

Goa, Konkan and Marathwada in Maharashtra, Gujarat, east Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh are very likely to witness enhanced rain activity in the next three-four days.
