New Delhi, May 15 (IANS) Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her government of misusing the state machinery to intimidate BJP leaders and workers.
The reaction came a day after the Kolkata Police registered a FIR against BJP President Amit Shah in connection with the violence during his roadshow on Tuesday.
Expressing concern over the increasing political violence in the state, Singh said in a series of tweets: "The FIR against BJP National President for the attacks on his roadshow in Kolkata is a mockery of democracy and due process."
He said the West Bengal government was misusing the state machinery to "stifle" the democratic rights of the people. "These attempts at intimidating the leaders and workers of a political party will fail miserably."
Expressing concern over the increasing incidents of political violence in the state, he said it seemed that the law and order situation there was worsening with every passing phase of the ongoing general elections.
"The law and order is the primary responsibility of a state government and its Chief Minister. The West Bengal government and the Chief Minister should own responsibility for the prevailing situation," he tweeted.
