Gurugram, March 20 (IANS) The crime branch of the Gurugram Police on Wednesday arrested two persons and seized 1.560 kg fine quality opium worth Rs 25 lakh in the international market on the Gurgaon-Alwar national highway near Maruti Kunj crossing.
It's the 20th case of seizure of the contraband in March. The police have also registered 17 cases linked with sale and supply of marijuana in the city.
The accused have been identified as Prakash Chandra Dhakar and Rameshwar, both natives of the Udaypur district in Rajasthan.
"During interrogation, the accused revealed that opium was in huge demand in the National Capital Region (NCR), especially at rave parties. They smuggled in opium from Jaitpur village in MP's Neemuch district," said Subhash Bokan, Public Relations Officers (PRO) of the Gurugram Police.
"The police team also seized a Maruti Alto car, which the accused used for smuggling," Bokan said.
The PRO said Dhakar, the main accused, had links with the NCR drug mafias. He supplied opium to organisers of high-scale parties, frequently held at different farm houses in Gurugram, Faridabad, south Delhi and Noida.
Dhakar, a repeat offender, was earlier arrested by the Kurukshetra Police, Bokan said.
A Gurugram court remanded Dhakar to seven-day police custody and Rameshwar to judicial custody.
"Dhakar is being probed for his contacts and supply chain in the NCR," Bokan said.
