Staring at defeat, Modi reinventing slogans: Congress

New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modis "'Main Bhi Chowkidar" campaign, the Congress on Tuesday said that staring at defeat, he was changing his slogans more frequently than his clothes.

"By adding 'chowkidar' (watchman) before their names, Modi Baba and his 40 thieves want to befool the public yet again. But the fact is the BJP government has nothing to show on the ground. In order to sell a flop brand, they (BJP) have to frequently change its name, its packaging and the logo," Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said here.

"In 2013, it was 'Rs 15 lakh in each Indian's account by retrieving black money from Swiss banks'. In 2014, it was 'Achche din aane wale hain' (Good days are ahead). In 2015, the slogan came 'Sabka sath, sabka vikas' (Progress for all) while in 2016 it changed to 'New India'.

"By 2017, the slogan was 'Mera desh badal raha hai' (My country is changing). In 2018, it was 'Saaf niyat, sahi vikas' (Pure intent, right development). And now, in 2019 he is saying 'Main bhi Chowkidar'. But Congress President Rahul Gandhi has already exposed him as the watchman of the thieves," Surjewala said.

The comment came days after Modi started a drive on Twitter asking people to add 'chowkidar' to their names on their Twitter handle. All the Union Ministers have already done it.

"The watchman who allowed Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi to flee is a thief. The watchman who allowed a handful of capitalists to loot lakhs and crores is a thief," Surjewala said.

He said that over the centuries, from Ravana to Mareech (both demons in Ramayana), rogues have always come in a different garb to deceive people.

"Ravana had come in the garb of a sadhu (an ascetic). Mareech came in the shape of a deer. In the present times, Modi Baba and his 40 thieves are going around adding 'chowkidar' in their names," he said.
