Watch Hasty Pudding Theatricals Honors Bryce Dallas Howard As 2019 Woman Of The Year
CAMBRIDGE, MA (January 31st, 2019) – The Hasty Pudding Theatricals, the oldest theatrical organization in the United States, welcomed actress BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD to Harvard University, where she received her Woman of the Year award and watched a preview of the first-ever Hasty Pudding Theatricals performance with a cast of both men and women.
The Woman of the Year Award is the Hasty Pudding Theatricals’ oldest honor, bestowed annually on performers who have made lasting and impressive contributions to the world of entertainment. Established in 1951, the Woman of the Year Award has been given to many notable and talented entertainers including Ella Fitzgerald, Meryl Streep, Whoopi Goldberg, Julia Roberts, Halle Berry, Kerry Washington, Octavia Spencer, and most recently Mila Kunis, the 68th Woman of the Year.
The Woman of the Year festivities, presented by RELATED, Equinox, and MAC Cosmetics, began with a parade through the streets of Cambridge. The weather was quite cold, but with abundant sunshine. Following the parade, the Hasty Pudding Theatricals hosted a celebratory roast for the actress at Farkas Hall, the Hasty Pudding’s historic home in the heart of Harvard Square since 1888. At the beginning of the event, Chairman and Grand Sphinx of the Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770 Andrew L. Farkas took the stage and made initial remarks, stating that the Hasty Pudding has “done what every organization should do, which is welcome women into our cast, turning [the Hasty Pudding] completely co-ed.” Afterwards, after an introduction from roastmasters Hasty Pudding Theatricals President Grace C. Ramsey and Cast Vice President David J. Lynch, Ms. Howard was brought on stage to earn her Pudding Pot.
First, HPT took Ms. Howard back to school by having her prove her mettle as an actress by fake crying on command for a commercial directed by “Professor Shakespeare.” Next, she had to face a velociraptor in a basketball dunk-off as part of a fictional Jurassic World sequel, Jurassic Globetrotters. Finally, in a role reversal from the events in The Help, Ms. Howard was asked to throw a pie in the face of one of her three mortal enemies, eventually choosing to take down an anthropomorphized version of gluten. Ultimately, Ms. Howard was graciously awarded her Pudding Pot. Upon receiving her award, the smiling honoree said, “I will never forget this as long as I live, and please accept my children into Harvard.”
A press conference followed the presentation. To close out the festivities, the Hasty Pudding Theatricals members performed several musical numbers from the group’s upcoming 171st production France France Revolution.
The Hasty Pudding Theatricals will celebrate their 53rd Man of the Year, MILO VENTIMIGLIA, on Friday, February 8th, 2019. The traditional roast and Pudding Pot ceremony will take place at Farkas Hall, as well as the opening night of HPT 171: France France Revolution.
