Srinagar, Jan 26 (IANS) A gunfight between the security forces and militants started on Saturday in the outskirts here of the Jammu and Kashmir capital, police said.
The Rashtriya Rifles, special operations group (SOG) of state police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel surrounded the Khonmoh area following information about militant presence.
"As the cordon was tightened, the militants fired triggering the encounter that is still going on," a police officer said.
Security was heightened in the city as various officials functions have been planned in connection with the Republic Day celebrations on the day.
