Over 28 lakh challans issued in Haryana; Rs 62 crore penalty realized

Chandigarh, Jan 3 (IANS) The Haryana Police issued over 28.09 lakh traffic violation tickets (challans) against those violating traffic rules in 11 months last year and recovered a penalty of over Rs 62.17 crore from such violators, a senior officer said on Thursday.

Director General of Police (DGP) B.S. Sandhu said the challans were issued between January 1 and November 30, 2018.

He said that during this period, highest number of over 12.54 lakh challans were issued to offenders in Gurugram district, followed by over 2.51 lakh challans in Faridabad district with a penalty of over Rs 22.07 crore and Rs 5.66 crore respectively being recovered.

"On an average, around 8,411 people are being booked every day for traffic violations in the state, including wrong side driving, parking on wrong side, riding without helmet and seat belt, over speeding, drunken driving and other traffic offences," the DGP said.

97,900 challans were issued in Panchkula district, in Rohtak (over 1.24 lakh), Panipat (1.08 lakh), Hisar (93,896), Kurukshetra (90,709) and other districts accounted for the rest of the challans, he said.

Sandhu said the Haryana Police is contemplating to bring down road fatalities as most of the accidents take place due to traffic violations.

"We can impose more penalties on traffic violators, but revenue collection through fines is not the purpose. Rather, our prime objective is that people must follow traffic rules and save their precious lives as well as of others," the DGP added.
