Court extends Chidambarams’ interim protection from arrest

New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS) A Delhi court on Tuesday extended former Minister P. Chidambaram and his son Karti's interim protection from arrest till January 11, 2019, in the Aircel-Maxis deal case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told Special Judge O.P. Saini that prosecution sanction is still awaited from the competent authority to proceed against five other accused in the case. It sought more time for the purpose.

On November 26, the CBI told the court that it has received requisite sanction from the competent authority to prosecute the former Minister.

The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are investigating how Karti Chidambaram managed to get clearance from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) for the Aircel-Maxis deal in 2006 when his father was the Union Finance Minister.

The ED on October 25 filed a charge-sheet in the case naming Chidambaram and a few others.

The CBI had on July 19 filed another chargesheet against 18 persons in the case.
