Mexico, Dec 17 (IANS) Club America defeated Cruz Azul 2-0 with a double by Edson Alvarez, winning them the Mexican Liga MX Apertura and their 13th crown, making them the team with the most titles in the league.
The teams were cautious in the first half of the match on Sunday. America stepped into its rival's zone often but failed to produce results. Cruz Azul retained a strong defense and limited the effectiveness of its rivals on the wings, reports Efe news.
In the second half, Alvarez scored his first goal in the 51st minute.
Goalkeeper Jesus Corona saved Cruz Azul by stopping Ibarra's run on minute 54, and again on minute 64.
Three minutes later, Elias Hernandez took a long shot in what was Cruz Azul's most promising play.
While Corona stood his ground, the team's defense, considered the best of the season, was bested by America several times.
Alvarez crowned himself as the match's hero at minute 90 by recovering a rebound by the goalkeeper Corona and securing his second goal and the team's victory.
Cruz Azul's defeat extended its 21-year-streak without a league championship.
The game also marked a sixth lost final for the team, which had finished first in the regular phase with only one loss on its home turf.
