Madrid, Nov 26 (IANS) Cristiano Ronaldo, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe have been nominated for the Best Player of the Year by the Globe Soccer Awards.
Now with Italian club Juventus, Portugal forward Ronaldo is a strong contender to win a sixth Globe for Best Player, after having led his former club Real Madrid to win a third straight UEFA Champions League title in May, reports Efe.
France forwards Griezmann and Mbappe also had a strong year, winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup this summer.
Additionally, Griezmann claimed the 2017/2018 UEFA Europa League title with Spanish club Atletico Madrid, while Mbappe's French club Paris Saint-Germain has completely dominated the domestic competitions in recent seasons.
Ronaldo came in second in the FIFA World Player of the Year award, presented by the international governing body in September.
He lost out to Luka Modric of Croatia -- his former Real Madrid teammate -- but ahead of Egypt's Mohamed Salah, who had a record-breaking year with English club Liverpool, which lost to Madrid in the Champions League final.
In other Globe awards, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool are to compete for Best Club of the Year.
Best Coach of the Year is between retired Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane, Didier Deschamps of the French national team, Diego Simeone of Atletico Madrid, Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool and Maximiliano Allegri of Juventus.
There are also awards for Best Agent, Best Referee, Best Goalkeeper, Player Career Award, Coach Career Award and Arab Career Award.
The 10th edition of the Globe Soccer Awards is to be held on January 3, 2019 at an event in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
