LPU students dance their way to world record

Jalandhar (Punjab), Nov 1 (IANS) Dancing joyfully to the beats of 'dhols', hundreds of enthusiastic students of Lovely Professional University (LPU) set a Guinness World Record for the largest 'bhangra' performance.

A record 4,411 students from various states and other countries participated in the record-setting performance on the LPU campus near Jalandhar, around 160km from Chandigarh.

The world record 'bhangra' performance was done to mark 'Punjab Day' (Nov 1).

"This record surpasses the 2011 Guinness World Record when 2,100 people performed 'bhangra' together. For streamlining the mammoth event, 35 cultural coordinators from different departments and student organizations of the university participated along with 100-plus student volunteers," said ALPU Chancellor Ashok Mittal.

"All participants performed continuously seven steps of bhangra, attired in traditional Punjabi dresses. The singing was accompanied by at least 16 Punjabi folk dance musical instruments," an LPU spokesman said.

He said 'Dhol King' Gurcharan Mall of England played during the world record event.

The Guinness Book of World Record Team headed by Swapnil Dangarikar judged the event, the spokesman said.

Enjoying the record-breaking dance performance were many foreigner-guests from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and other countries.

Chief coordinator of the event and head of World Bhangra Association (England) Tarlochan Singh Bilgha said the event was organized to promote Punjabi culture.
