DVC plans 1,500mw pumped storage facility, to cost Rs 5,200 cr

Kolkata, Aug 17 (IANS) The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) is planning to set up a 1,500mw pumped storage facility in Jahrkhand's Bokaro at an estimated cost of Rs 5,200 crore, an official said on Friday.

"We are planning to set up the 1,500mw (6*250 mw) pumped storage facility at Lugu Pahar near Bokaro," its Chairman P.K. Mukhopadhyay said.

"The total project cost is estimated at Rs 5,200 crore and it will act as a storage facility for solar power generating units," he said on the sidelines of CII Energy Conclave here.

A pre-feasibility study has been completed and a detailed project report will be prepared by an agency at a cost of around Rs 40 crore, according to him. The report will be completed in the next two years.

The power utility, along with its partner NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN), recently won a supply contract of 300 mw of power for a 15-year time period.

"We are prepared for starting supply. We are expecting to start selling power to Bangladesh within a month," Mukhopadhyay said.

Responding to a query relating to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the Supreme Court against both these firms, challenging the legalities involved in the bidding process, he said: "We will contest it. We have been supplying power to eight states and we do not have any restrictions in supplying power."

Asked whether the utility will find any difficulties in exporting power generated from domestic coal, he said: "We have a combination of power including sources like thermal, hydro and solar. Our contract with Bangladesh is not based on any specific plant and we will supply from our pool of power."
