Haryana to hold student union elections

Chandigarh, July 31 (IANS) The Haryana government will hold elections to student unions in universities and colleges in September or early October this year.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Tuesday that student union elections will be conducted in the next academic session 2018-19.

"The students' union elections would be held in colleges and universities of the state in the last week of September, or, in the first week of October," Khattar said here.

Issuing directions in this regard to all deputy commissioners and superintendents of police through video-conferencing here, Khattar told them to make arrangements to ensure that the elections could be held in a peaceful manner.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had promised to hold elections to student bodies in its election manifesto released before the October 2014 assembly polls in the state.

Student union elections have not been held in Haryana for the past many years.
