Government not sincere about Opposition issues: Congress

New Delhi, July 30 (IANS) The Congress on Monday alleged that government was not sincere about issues that the Opposition wants to raise, and that Parliament cannot be run only for government business.

Talking to reporters, Congress leader Anand Sharma said the situation was "unprecedented."

"Notices have been given by Congress and other opposition parties. The issues are of national importance and should be accepted without delay. The Opposition has now realised that the government is neither sincere nor serious about Opposition issues," he said.

"Parliament cannot be run only for government business. No parliament can function by excluding issues of Opposition parties," he said.

Sharma said there was an atmosphere of "fear, violence and intolerance" and that mob lynching incidents were taking place in different parts of the country.

Alleging that the economy was being mismanaged, he sought a white paper.

"(For the) first time, the bills, calling attention motion, short duration discussion are from the ruling side," he said.

The Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated adjournments on Monday over publication of final draft of the National Register of Citizens in Assam that excludes more than 40 lakh people.

Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien also talked to the media and said the Prime Minister Narendra Modi should address the concerns of Opposition on NRC in the Rajya Sabha and a legislation should be brought to address the apprehensions.

He said the government was not interested in running the House.
