UP’s women ‘shiksha mitras’ tonsure their heads in protest

Lucknow, July 25 (IANS) Over a dozen 'shiksha mitra' women activists demanding full benefits of assistant teachers and other welfare schemes on Wednesday tonsured their heads against the state government's apathetic attitude towards them.

Hundreds of state 'shiksha mitras' are out on the streets for over a month. They say the government is yet to reach out to them.

The 'shiksha mitras' have been pressing for direct appointment of 30,000 candidates who have cleared their Teachers' Eligibility Test (TET) and financial assistance to those who have died during the prolonged agitation.

The Supreme Court in July, 2017 had cancelled 'assimilation' of 'shiksha mitras' triggering protests across the state.
