Panaji, July 23 (IANS) The Goa government is considering a ban on the use of plastic on beaches, coastal and riverine areas falling under the purview of the Coastal Regulatory Zones, Urban Development Minister Francis D'Souza told the Assembly on Monday.
"The proposal to ban plastic use, especially on beaches and CRZ areas, by declaring them plastic-free zones is under consideration," D'Souza said in a written reply to Congress MLA Isidore Fernandes.
Asked if any study had been conducted to assess the impact of plastic waste on marine life in streams and rivers, D'Souza said: "No environment impact study has been undertaken by Panaji Municipal Corporation, municipal councils or the Directorate of Municipal Administration."
