Tottenham Hotspur’s Son signs contract extension until 2023

Tottenham Hotspur's Son signs contract extension until 2023London, July 20 (IANS) South Korean winger Son Heung-min has signed a contract extension with Tottenham Hotspur until 2023, the capital football club announced on Friday.

The 26-year-old, who moved to Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen, has developed into one of coach Mauricio Pochettino's most potent attacking weapons along with striker Harry Kane and attacking midfielder Dele Alli, reports Efe.

Son, who has scored 47 goals in 140 appearances for Tottenham, has committed his future to the club after earning plaudits for his performance at the World Cup in Russia, despite South Korea being eliminated from the group stages.

The highlight of their campaign came when they defeated reigning world champions Germany 2-0, with Son scoring his country's second goal.

That result was not enough to earn him an exemption from completing his military service; he will have to serve for 23 months if his country does not win gold at the upcoming Asian Games, which take place from August 18 to September 2 in Indonesia.

South Korean law stipulates that any professional athlete who earns an Olympic medal or gold at the Asian Games can be exempt from completing their military service.

South Korea will be among the favourites to take gold, having won the Asian Games soccer tournament in 1970, 1978, 1986 and 2014.
