According to a BBC report quoting Kazakhstan news agency Kazinform, Ten was stabbed in the thigh in Almaty after two men tried to steal his car mirrors.
Ten, who won bronze at Sochi 2014 was rushed to hospital but died three hours later of his injuries.
"Unfortunately, he is not with us anymore," a government spokesman said.
Mourning his death, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said on Twitter: "Denis Ten was a great athlete and a great ambassador for his sport. A warm personality and a charming man. Such a tragedy to lose him at such a young age."
February's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang was Ten's third Games, having made his Olympic debut at Vancouver 2010.
He finished 27th at the Games in South Korea.
