Madrid, July 14 (IANS) Spanish top-division football club Real Betis has signed Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon on a five-year contract.
Carvalho was part of the mass runaway from Sporting Lisbon after fans attacked the club's training ground in May when their team failed to secure a post in the Champion's League next season. Betis secured his signature on Friday.
The 26-year-old has netted 11 goals in his 191 appearances for the Portugese club, reported Xinhua news agency.
His 47 international caps for the Portuguese national team include defeating hosts France to win the 2016 UEFA European Championship and four starts at the Russia World Cup before Portugal was knocked out by Uruguay.
