Congress slams government for not taking stand on decriminalizing gay sex

New Delhi, July 11 (IANS) With the Narendra Modi government leaving decriminalizing gay sex to Supreme Court's wisdom, Congress on Wednesday slammed it for not taking a stand on the issue and claimed it the government believes in "such draconian laws".

"It is extremely unfortunate that after evolving as a society, we continue to hold on some draconian law which has no place into these times.

"The fact that government has not taken a stance on the issue and put the onus on the Hon'ble Supreme Court goes on to show that Modiji's government continues to believe in such draconian laws," said Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi.

"It has let down a huge section of people, who voted for him (Modi) and BJP hoping that they will be able to bring about a change."

The Central government on Wednesday said it was leaving it to the wisdom of the Supreme Court to decide if a law that criminalizes consensual gay sex was constitutionally valid.
