Rangnick will return to his double function as coach and sporting director for the season 2018-19 before Julian Nagelsmann joins from Hoffenheim next season, it was announced on Monday, reports Xinhua news agency.
"We have worked together for a long time and have now found the best solution to continue on our successful path," Leipzig president Oliver Mintzlaff said.
The 60-year-old sporting director was already in charge as Leipzig's coach and helped the club to secure their first ever Bundesliga promotion in 2016.
Leipzig signed Nagelsmann for the 2019-20 campaign. Hence, an interim solution for the upcoming season was needed.
"It was a decision we had to think over. We have decided that I will take on the coaching role, with the help of the best possible coaching staff," Rangnick said.
The club announced that Jesse March has agreed to terms on a two-year deal as assistant coach for Rangnick.
Leipzig completed the Bundesliga season 2017-18 on the 6th place of the standings and secure a ticket for next season's UEFA Europa League group stage.
