Alianza Lima signs Uruguayan forward Mauricio Affonso

Lima (Peru), July 6 (IANS) Peruvian club Alianza Lima has announced the signing of Uruguayan forward Mauricio Affonso, a move aimed at bolstering its line-up for a run at a repeat title.

Play will resume in the Peruvian league's Apertura tournament, which Alianza leads with 12 points, upon the conclusion of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, reported Efe.

The 26-year-old Affonso comes to the 2017 Peruvian-league champions from Argentine club Atletico Tucuman, where he scored one goal in 12 games.

He will take the roster spot previously occupied by countryman Gabriel Leyes, who left Alianza Lima last month after scoring only three goals in nearly a year.

Two of those goals, however, came in the final game of the 2017 season and gave Alianza its first domestic-league title in a decade.

Alianza Lima continues to draw on Uruguayan talent with the signing of the 1.92-meter (6-foot-3) Affonso, who joins two compatriots - head coach Pablo Bengoechea and defender Gonzalo Godoy - already in the Aliancistas' locker room.
