New Delhi, July 3 (IANS) The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday barred any public and private functions at a park in east Delhi.
Observing that "flora may get destroyed", if the park is allotted for purposes like marriage and religious functions, a bench headed by acting NGT Chairperson Justice Jawad Rahim thereby restricted civic bodies from holding or allow any such function to be in the park in Mayur Vihar area.
"Considering that the size of the park is not very big, there is likelihood of the flora getting destroyed. Therefore, we restrain the respondents from allowing public function in the park," the bench said.
The green court was hearing a plea filed by city resident Shalini Tyagi, who stated that the Forest Department had been chopping trees in park named 'Mahavir Vatika' in Mayur Vihar Phase-II.
She also alleged that the East Delhi Municipal Corporation allots park for functions even as there was a community hall in the area.
The matter will be heard again on July 23.
