New Delhi, June 29 (IANS) A driver and his three accomplices have been arrested on the charge of threatening to kidnap his employer's minor son and demanding over Rs 1 crore from the family in south Delhi, police said on Friday.
The complainant, an engineer with the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, had filed a complaint with the Safdarjung Enclave police station last week after receiving multiple threatening calls.
Accused Mukesh, 27, Sehdev, 23, Sonu, 22, and Sachin, 19, are residents of Pul Prahladpur area and were arrested on Thursday evening after they came to collect the extortion money near Badkhal Chowk in Haryana's Faridabad.
"A countrymade pistol and four mobile phones used for making extortion calls were seized from them," Deputy Commissioner of Police Romil Baaniya said.
"The accused had on June 13 detained the minor son of the complainant but later released him in Faridabad and started making extortion calls to put pressure on the family. They used various mobile applications on the Internet to conceal their identities," Baaniya said.
The accused also posed as accomplices of dreaded gangster Rajesh Bharti who was killed in a police shootout this month, he added.
The complainant was directed by the accused to reach Faridabad to deliver the extortion money. After two youths -- later identified as Sachin and Sonu -- arrived at the spot on a motorcycle and approached the complainant to collect the money, police arrested them.
On their information, their two accomplices were also arrested.
"During interrogation, the accused claimed they were from poor families and committed the crime for money. Sahdev, who works as a driver with the engineer, along with his accomplices hatched a plan to kidnap his son for earning quick money. He knew that the official owned a farmhouse in Faridabad and could afford to pay up," Baaniya added.
