Layun lauds Mexico’s victory over Germany as historic

Layun lauds Mexico's victory over Germany as historicNovogorsk (Russia), June 18 (IANS) Mexico left-back Miguel Layun on Monday billed his national football team's 1-0 victory over defending World Cup champion Germany in their opening group stage game in Russia as historic but warned against complacency.

Layun, 29, who plies his trade with Spanish La Liga side Sevilla on loan from Porto, spoke with Efe a day after Mexico beat the odds by opening their Russia campaign with a win over Die Mannschaft who, for all its combined experience on the pitch, found no response to Hirving Lozano's 35th minute goal, which capped off an expert display of counter-attack football in the first half.

"It was a historic triumph for everyone," Layun told Efe at the Novogorsk training ground on the outskirts of Moscow.

"But that's not all we want, we want to achieve the dreams that everyone has when they put on this jersey."

Teammate Jonathan Dos Santos, currently playing for LA Galaxy in the MLS, reiterated Layun's sentiments, underlining that there was "much still to be done".

"We put the right foot forward and we know we're on the right path," he added.

Both players praised the tactics of Mexico's Colombian head coach Juan Carlos Osorio.

Mexico's famously passionate fans were visibly elated by their team's surprise win against the Germans but tricky fixtures against South Korea and Sweden stand in their way before they can ensure a safe ascent out of Group F.
