Children learn about caring for environment inside Metro train

New Delhi, June 4 (IANS) A day ahead of the World Environment Day, the Delhi Metro Rail Corp (DMRC) on Monday hosted a story-telling class for school kids inside a train to teach them about the perils of wastefulness.

The session was organised in collaboration with National Book Trust (NBT), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), IJ Kakehashi Services Pvt. Ltd, and Kodansha Ltd, a Japanese publication.

In the session, about 100 primary school students from several schools were narrated the story of 'Mottainai Grandma' -- a Japanese picture book story of a grandmother who spots wasteful behaviour and spreads awareness about it.

First published in Japan in 2004 by Kodansha, the book was translated in Hindi and English and published early this year here by the NBT.

"The objective of the event was to promote environmental awareness amongst children and people across the society through interesting storytelling methodology," the DMRC said in a statement.

The event was conducted inside a metro train at the Dwarka Metro station.

Muni International School, Bal Bharti Public School - Dwarka, Vidya Anand Niketan - Dwarka, Swaranjali Vidya Mandir - Khanpur and a few NGOs that work for children with special needs participated in the event.
