Washington, May 29 (IANS) An investigation has been launched after a video showed a police officer punching a woman at a New Jersey beach in an attempt to arrest her for being a minor in possession of alcohol, the media reported.
In the video posted on social media, 20-year-old Emily Weinman from Pennsylvania is seen resisting as two police officers try to subdue her, CNN reported on Monday.
According to a statement issued by the Wildwood Police Department on Sunday, Weinman was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault by spitting at a police officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstruction and with being a minor in possession of alcohol.
In the video, one of the officers punch her head twice and then pins her to the ground while another holds her leg steady, as they attempt to handcuff her. A third officer tries to control the crowd.
Weinman can be heard shouting: "You're not allowed to hit me and choke me like that. I didn't do anything wrong."
An internal investigation has been launched into the officers' conduct, according to the statement.
In the meantime, the officers involved in the incident have been reassigned to administrative duty.
