Punjab procures over 127 lakh tonnes of wheat

Chandigarh, May 29 (IANS) 'Green Revolution' state Punjab has procured over 127.32 lakh tonnes of wheat in this season, a Food and Supplies Department spokesman said here on Tuesday.

Over 126.25 lakh tonnes of wheat has been lifted from the grain markets so far, he added.

The state has disbursed nearly Rs 19,500 crore to farmers and arhtiyas (commission agents) for the wheat procurement in this Rabi season.

As much as 99 per cent of the wheat has been procured by government agencies in the state.

Procurement of wheat started on April 1.
