Massive stockpile of explosives seized in Bengal, one held

Kolkata, May 29 (IANS) West Bengal Police on Tuesday seized a huge cache of explosives, including gelatine sticks and detonators, from a house in the state's Birbhum district and arrested one person in this connection, a senior officer said.

"We recovered more than 50,000 detonators and 11,000 pieces of gelatine sticks from a house in Birbhum's Nalhati on Tuesday morning. It is one of the biggest explosives seizures in the state in recent times," Birbhum Superintendent of police Sudhir Kumar Neelkantha told IANS.

Acting on a tip-off, the police raided a house in Nalhati's Bahadurpur village and seized the explosives and arrested the owner of the house, Angur Sheikh.

However, Kumar said, it needed to be investigated whether the explosives were brought to aid illegal mining activities in the locality or for some other reason.
