The clash took place around 2 p.m. near Nimta-Birati area in Kolkata's northern fringes.
"Though windowpanes of two police vehicles were shattered and a back windshield of another police car damaged in stone-pelting, no officer was injured," an official from Nimta police station said.
The agitators also gheraoed local MP and senior Trinamool Congress leader Sougata Roy's car when he went to the spot.
Police said the situation turned ugly earlier after two municipal workers allegedly attacked municipality Vice-Chairman Sk. Najum Uddin following a verbal spat. His supporters demonstrated outside the municipality to demand the arrest of the accused.
The protestors clashed outside the municipality and later blocked the nearby road and railway track for almost an hour. Police baton-charged the crowd to disperse it.
"We have unanimously decided to revoke the licences of the two accused municipal workers. Police will take appropriate action against the trouble-makers," Roy said.
"The situation is under control now. No one has been arrested yet," the officer added.
